Still Life with Edward Sprafkin

This four-hour painting workshop will focus on the subject of still life. Still-life painting is one of the best subjects to study to learn about light’s characteristics and how light and shadow work together. In landscape painting, the light source is constantly on the move, but in still-life painting, our light source is fixed, allowing us to analyze color, texture, and reflected light in a controlled environment.

Students are welcome to work from personal items brought to class (space permitting) or objects supplied by the instructor. A subject can be as simple as a piece of fruit or something more elaborate involving multiple items. A painting demonstration will start the workshop, followed by plenty of one-on-one assistance throughout the day.

If you’re an oil painter, it is highly recommend to use water-mixable oils for their ease of clean-up and non-reliance on vapor-harmful solvents. If you use traditional oil paints, please use Gamsol only, keep it capped when not in use and be aware that no oil products are allowed to go down the sinks. Edward will be working in either acrylic or gouache paints for the demonstrations; however, you are free to use your paint of choice.
