Inside the Box Pastel Workshop with Liz Kenyon

In this workshop, participants will Create a theatrically lighted still life for a pastel drawing.
When you arrive at the workshop you will receive a cardboard box 10” x 10” x 14”.  Liz will demonstrate how you can place an image inside the back of the box showing a beautiful sunrise or nature scene cut from a large calendar or an enlarged print of your own art work.   On the floor and walls of your box you can attach colorful paper to create ambient light.  You can attach flying stars or artificial birds, the skies the limit-I will furnish the wire.  Next you place objects brought from your home such as model cars, colored glass bottles, fruit, flowers.   Look around your environment, choose a few things that say ‘you” and arrange them in class to create depth, a pathway or a balance of values and color. A light will then be placed to shine through a hole in your box and you will discover suddenly, a ‘theatrical’ scene.  You can take a photograph to have a hard copy and then paint an image of your box with whatever medium you choose.

After a few hours we will break and share our results and experiences with each other.  This technique is a way to tell a story with dramatic lighting and reveal a unique side of your inner world.
