Expressive Watercolor Portraits with Annette Smith

Working from provided photo reference, Annette Smith will share with students her method of painting an expressive portrait in watercolor. She will explain her use of color, mixing flesh tones, brushwork, and controlling edges. Individual attention will be given to all students throughout the day.

Annette Smith Biography
Dedicated to painting and drawing from life, Annette’s goal is to infuse the energy of life studies into her studio portrait pieces. With a loose impressionistic style, she strives to capture her subject’s likeness with fresh color and minimal brushwork, always bearing in mind to describe the essentials and let other details go.

Annette teaches local workshops at Scottsdale Artists’ School, drawing students from around the country as well as Canada. She has studied under Julie Gilbert-Pollard, Kim Johnson, Ted Nuttall, and the amazing Charles Reid.

The recipient of many awards, Annette has received several first-place and best in show awards. She has shown constantly over her career. Her drawings are published in 2 Northlight Books, Strokes of Genius: The Best of Drawing, and Strokes of Genius 2 The Best of Light and Shadow as well as Sara Evan’s The Naked Nude.
