Artist’s Statement:
Each painting begins with an idea of shape, design, color, and patterns. As the painting evolves it takes on its own direction. The artist must constantly “listen” to the painting and work with the challenges the painting presents. The joy of painting is letting the process
lead you on a journey of exploration. You never know what the final image will be until you arrive at your destination!
Ellen Nemetz
My realistic acrylic paintings start with reference photos. I draw the design directly onto the canvas before laying in any color. I work in layers of color, glazing some areas multiple times while leaving other areas with unmodified color.
Marvella Fray
Her early art training included earning BA in Studio Art from the University of Maryland, specializing in oil painting and welding. She also holds a Master’s degree in Counseling from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. As a therapist, she incorporated her passion for art making and education in art therapy to work with adolescents in several states and earned several grants to develop art projects for working with youth to create community art.
Marvella draws her inspiration to paint from the beauty and diversity of the human spirit and the natural world. She paints to evoke and communicate a feeling or mood, an emotional connection to people, places and animals in the world we share. Inspired by the expressionists, she uses bold and unexpected colors and dynamic line to create movement and interest.
She has exhibited and sold her artwork at The Herberger Theater Art Gallery, The Vision Gallery, The Mood Room, The Arizona Art Guild, The Arizona Art Alliance, WHAM Gallery, The Gammage Theater, Ground Floor Artists Gallery, Exposed Studio, Cahokia Gallery, Desert Foothills Gallery and the Found:RE Gallery.
Enjoy the Show!

Light, color, and emotion across the desert, the coast and the human form fuel my intentions as an artist. I focus on the interplay of sun and shadow on the harshness and serenity of the desert. The warm hues of earth and cool tones of distant skies are a colorist’s dream. Through my art, I aim to honor the beauty of the world around us, whether it be the contradictions of the desert, the always changing coast, or the delight found in a face.

Color is the driving force in all of my art – and has been throughout my life. For me, trying different approaches to the same art practice is essential to keep my interests honed. Exploration and Growth keep me from getting stale – instead they fuel my inspiration. By building out the architecture of the composition with shapes, contrasts and graphic design elements, I achieve the desired results in my contemporary art works.

My artwork is an expression of the world around me. I love to travel and I find the colors, experiences and joys from my travels end up in my art. That is a good thing! I like to use upbeat colors and see the positive in the world around me. I am always experimenting with different mediums and styles and try to incorporate them into my artwork. My goal in my artwork is to inspire the viewer to see something that is up and positive.

My art is a visual expression of my creative journey and the multifaceted life we live today. I paint with layers, texture and mixed media to create a textured environment which tries to express the many sides of our lives. The principles of good design are the same principles of good art. By mixing pieces of paper, unique, tactile materials and decorative elements to my paintings, I create a dimensional aspect to the canvas. These all play an intricate part in my work to produce pieces that work in harmony.

As an artist, I am drawn to the beauty of the human form and experience, as well as the landscapes we inhabit. Light and shadow tell the story, shaping movement and imbuing each scene with emotion. I explore the boundaries of color, stretching it to create images that feel both vivid and true. My work is about capturing a moment—an interpretation of the world as I see it—finding beauty in the mundane and breathing life into each subject through imagination, invention, and the dynamic interplay of light.

My work is the study of light and values through multiple mediums. My many years as a photographer has given me an eye for the play of light that is invaluable as a painter. Working in multiple mediums allows me to express the nuances of light in different ways as each medium has its strengths and challenges.

I’m an Arizona based Artist and I paint semi-realistic and abstract landscapes. Using thick impasto paint and colors that convey my emotional sentiments about a particular location, I portray the southwestern landscape, together with its flora and fauna. The enigma and spiritual sensations that emerge from the ordinary and the natural world have an impact on me. The interactions between people and the natural world are explored in my paintings. I want the audience to become conscious of their own unique ties to and relationships with nature that they might not have previously recognized.

My work explores the melding of nature and surrealism, using observations and warped sense of humor to create surreal landscapes. I am drawn to the way nature can cloak and conceal the natural world, prompting me to illustrate and interpret my own relationship with both. My process involves utilizing the obscure into the art thereby giving the observer an opportunity to seek out the hidden. The final images are meant to evoke a sense of wonder and curiosity, inviting the viewer to take another look at what is obvious and what is hidden”

Since graduating from ASU with an MFA in printmaking, my work has transitioned from drawings to prints to clay and from figurative to abstract. Dipping back into my roots as a printmaker, my April 2023 solo show “Heavens And Earth” exemplified my shift from clay to printmaking. My solo show January 2025, “Unfolding” featured stand-alone monotypes and triptychs where ceramic relief sculptures are flanked by abstract floral prints that together unify and explore the harmony of Earth’s flora and fauna. Flowers are used to symbolize the universe at multiple levels. Blooming petals and seed pistils depict the cycle of birth, propagation, death, and renewal observed both on Earth and in the cosmos. The colorful geometric patterns give the viewer a bird-and-bee’s-eye view of the blossom and underscore the interdependence of living things.

Splashing in color, watching paint dry. Splashing in color describes both my process and art. Painting is an adventure — I love experimenting and finding unexpected patterns with pure color and organic forms. After many years of realistic projects I’ve been exploring more open means of expression thorough impressionist and abstract images. I was first attracted to the brush work and use of white space in Chinese painting, then discovered experimental techniques like marbling and ink staining using modern materials. I use a variety of water and liquid media on diverse materials like sugar cane paper, Yupo recycled plastic, mineral paper (made from rocks). I also make my own paper with cotton fibers, recycled material, plants and interesting findings. Each has unique characteristics that make painting engaging and challenging. My great teacher and mentor Joan Yen always said, “encourage your viewers’ imagination”. I hope you see something new in my work.

Our relationship with nature is what I wish to convey. My hope is for people to enjoy and preserve our planet as well as each other. Lately, my pieces have been a combination of linocuts, etchings, and monoprints with different papers and collage. I like combining materials to produce more texture, color, and depth. I have also been working with clay and wood. As we find a new adventure and purpose, our lives unfold and move constantly forward. During that time, let’s consider preserving the beauty and power of our world.

Texture has a strong presence in my artwork. Love of texture developed as a result of visits to my family’s homeland in Italy. I was fascinated with the facade of ancient buildings & landmarks throughout the country. Italy’s love of scarred & graffitied surfaces made an impression on me. The look of natural rough stone is included in much of my art. I prefer to paint intuitively…often with no preconceived image in mind. I welcome the challenge of that blank scarred surface, looking back at me, beckoning me to create.

Texture, line and color play an important role in my artwork. The process of layering and combination of each medium is very exciting! I love to see what will happen when each addition of pigment is introduced to the support. It is putting the puzzle together and making each layer work to create unity. I start with an idea then cultivate that idea into a series of artwork. I allow atmosphere, mood and sounds to take over. This helps me create a piece of art and not copy a photograph. For me the essence of each piece comes alive.

I use artistic storytelling to create a safe framework for analyzing ranges of emotions. I record memories and invent entirely new worlds while maintaining a mood of comfort and nostalgia. My art is an act of escapism, providing glimpses of varied perspectives, windows, and stories. To achieve this, my style leans fantastical, whimsical, and illustrative, drawing on the influences of picture books and children’s illustrators. I am inspired by and utilize a wide variety of 2-D materials to create balance and dimension that cannot be achieved with just one material. The language of mixed media helps me translate emotions into physical objects, which is enhanced by working with bright colors and specific color schemes. Each piece is intended to tell a story, even if no traditional characters are present. Throughout these stories I explore real and imagined landscapes, making symbolic use of motifs such as trees, branches, and leaves. Furthermore, I touch on themes of childhood, reflection, and imagination to provide a moment of respite in an often challenging world. However, while my work is never threatening, nostalgia is not always a happy emotion, so I focus on emphasizing safety while acknowledging discomfort.

My work is like a diary. It contains my thoughts and reflects my experience. I have a specific attachment to my neighborhood which includes the people and the landscape. This proximity to my home and surroundings allows my reflections to run deep. I paint the humble and the modest, the fringes of the typical world, but I ennoble them to meet my valuation of them.

I am very fortunate. I have always been in the Arts. Learning the notes on the piano from my Grandmother who was a Piano teacher. Listening to Classical Music that my Brother brought before me. Playing instruments. Becoming a Photographer. Practicing Counseling and Social Work for 42 years, which I see as another Artistic process. Becoming a Painter and Collagist. I Create every day. I start with compassionate observation. I always have a camera with me. For me, Great Things Happen Where Arts Merge. I use Paint, Cameras and Digital Technologies. I do not use AI. All the objects available within my Artworks are of my own making. I aim for reciprocity between myself and my media. I love to be surprised in the act of Creation. My Artworks shown in this exhibition are all a result of these processes.

Experimentation and curiosity are driving forces in my creative process. Each of my works captures the thoughts, mood, and energy of the moment it was made. At any given point, I have a vast number of ideas in the form of memories, impressions and sketched images that I use in my art. I don’t intend to fit into a creative mold or apply forced limitations. From the time I can remember, I’m drawn to painting, and practicing art has been one of the few consistent things in my life on my journey from Bulgaria to NYC and Phoenix. Living in Arizona for the last eighteen years has slowly changed my color palette. The earthy, subtle, burned rust and sand hues of the desert landscape, have influenced me and transformed the coloristic qualities of my drawings and acrylic paintings. In my art, representational and abstract elements often blend to create a playful and intricate mix that reflects my life experiences. No matter what theme I’m exploring, my work is fundamentally rooted in classical drawing and my love of detail. I’m drawn to the expressive quality of the line. After decades working on representational art with oil, I switched to acrylics, enjoying their incredible versatility that matches my desire for constant experimentation. I love layering- in both the actual with acrylic skins and mediums, as well as the conceptual.

I was born and raised in Southern California, graduated from Sonoma State University with an art degree and received a graphic arts certificate from UCLA. Educated in oil, I now paint with acrylics. My approach is varied, sometimes realistic, sometimes abstract. It has been described as nostalgic, contemporary, deconstructive and surreal. Generally, I paint animals from photo references to express my emotions and different personalities. I use different colors, backgrounds and composition arrangements to achieve the effect I am attempting to achieve.

Visual inspiration can be from forms in nature such as trees reflecting in water or silhouetted against the sky. A deformed tree can turn into a subhuman character. Reality doesn’t have to dictate how a subject is interpreted in art.

Emphasis, pattern, rhythm, and balance are all concepts shared by painting, music and dancing. While I paint I use them all. Painting feeds my soul and makes my heart sing. I often paint my way out of challenging phases of my life, baring my soul to the canvas to heal my wounds. My medium of choice is acrylic due to its quick drying tendencies, which lends itself well to my style of fast action painting. My work is composed of powerful colors, palm and finger swipes and drips, which are built upon through layers until they eventually reveal a relationship to one another and create a strong illusion of depth. I have no grand illusions that art will create a revolution in the traditional sense but have witnessed the powerful changes it can make in an individual. Just one new idea can change a person’s perception, and I do that by titling my paintings using powerful statements spoken by my psychiatrist. My mission is to make a difference in people’s lives.

I have always enjoyed a good fantasy story and the freedom to envision how it looks in my mind. I aim to inspire viewers to discover a story that is uniquely their own. My paintings begin their journey with energy: inks drip and blend, acrylic pens swirl, and spray paint adds exciting textures and patterns. From this vibrant background, I weave in more refined and detailed depictions using highly pigmented oils. Natural wonders, children, animals, and dancers often emerge in these magical spaces, collectively creating enchanting worlds for the observer to enjoy

Through the years, I have tried many mediums but particularly love color pencil, ink, watercolor, and flat loom weaving. Since I am not formally trained in art, I find my work to be more intuitive and often considered a little (or maybe a lot) quirky. Perhaps it’s even a little kooky and hopefully fun. In a lot of my work I include additional and/or hidden characters like snakes, scorpions, Gila monsters, etc. My happy Saguaro Cacti are frequent subjects for me in my work. Whether they are dancing, shopping, or rafting, I love them all because nature inspires. For me, all artists should be able to enjoy designing and creating their art. We should do what we love and what makes us happy. I am a very lucky lady to be able to create.

One Sunday afternoon ten years ago, I got a wild hair: “I’m gonna try to draw,” I announced to the family and the corgis. Out of a closet came an old set of colored pencils and some paper. Out of the fridge came an apple and an orange. I got in the zone and had a blast, and when pretty bona-fide replicas of an orange and an apple appeared on the paper, I was shocked. How did this happen? Where did this crazy magic come from? And with that, I was hooked on colored pencil. Over the months, I fell in love with creating natural subjects in vibrant color and with strong lines. Over the years, amazing art opportunities (and a pretty great art-related job) followed. Today, colored pencil is my passion, and my life has found its lane. I’m still wondering where the magic comes from… and still having a blast.

I am a self-made artist who chose painting as a form of personal expression. Art has been an integral part of my life since childhood, serving as both a passion and a creative outlet. While I have taken classes at Kalakshetra College of Fine Arts, my artistic journey has largely been one of exploration, instinct, and self-discovery. My work is rooted in Abstract Expressionism and Minimalism, influenced by the philosophies of Gestural Painting and Biomorphic Abstraction. I work primarily with acrylics but also incorporate watercolors, inks, metallics, and mixed media to create depth and texture. Using techniques such as palette knife painting, impasto, negative space painting, and music-inspired brushwork, I strive to capture emotions, movement, and the organic forms found in nature. Music, nature, and emotions deeply inform my creative process. Whether through bold gestures or quiet minimalism, my work invites viewers to connect with their own interpretations. I do not seek to impose meaning but rather to create a space for introspection, resonance and healing. For me, painting is truth—an unfiltered, honest dialogue between color, texture, and emotion. My hope is that viewers find their own reflections within my work, experiencing something raw, real, and deeply personal.

I have been creating art for as long as I can remember. I come from a long line of artists and engineers, they are two sides of the same coin: one makes beautiful things that should be stable, the other makes stable things that should be beautiful. In my early twenties I started college at Northern Arizona University, but an abusive relationship took away my creative spark. I rediscovered it in my early thirties when friends asked me to help with a project for a non-profit organization: I remembered creating art is what I am made for. This prompted me to start taking classes, workshops, attending Glendale Community College, and later receiving my Bachelor of Fine Arts Cum Laude from Arizona State University. Making art is a form of stress relief. My paintings are beautiful, peaceful, and joyful. I bring visual order to chaos as a way to balance my work and myself. My goal is to bring beauty, and the feeling of peace and joy to the viewer.

Wood Canyon Lake
Pastel
9 x 12
$200
Walk with me…Sense the earth, touch the grass, smell the air, climb the trees, watch the water flow, feel the moment. You are there… I paint in pastels, acrylic, and watercolor, capturing on various surfaces (paper, canvas, wood, ornaments, etc.) scenes of places that have been visited by me, by friends and relatives, new acquaintances, and you. I hope you feel present in the scene, want to stand in it and immerse yourself in the beauty, touch the details, feel the texture. In addition to landscapes, among these works you will find interpretations of people, animals, and structures. If the painting is from a photograph of a special place in your experience or a special person or animal, I do my best to represent it with paint, brushes, and surface for you to feel a heart tug each time you gaze at it. If my painting is inspired, your imagination will trigger distinct details from your memory.

My art reflects who I am and who I am becoming. Inspired by everyday objects, nature and flora . Creating abstract and semi-abstract, intuitively. I hope people look at my work and see an artist that is playful, spontaneous and happy to “color outside the lines.” One that is not afraid to take chances as she navigates her journey.
