Gouache is a fun, portable, water-based medium that allows spontaneous painterly effects similar to traditional watercolor or allows thicker opaque passages like acrylic or oil paints. It is known for its vibrant color, matte finish, and reactivating properties, enabling edge control and corrections well after the paint has dried. This one-day immersive workshop will cover the basics of gouache and explore a range of landscape subjects to broaden our skill set and increase our painting confidence. Students work from their references or from those supplied by the instructor. Students are encouraged to work at a smaller scale to increase their productivity and get over the medium’s learning curve more quickly.

Edward Sprafkin is an impressionistic painter whose favorite subjects include landscapes, portraits, and figures. He strives to create a great sense of depth, mood, and atmosphere in his paintings, regardless of their scale. Edward is just as passionate about teaching as he is about painting. He enjoys sharing his knowledge and finds inspiration in seeing students progress to new skill levels. Edward Sprafkin’s work has been featured in American Artist Magazine, juried, and shown from coast to coast, including the Salmagundi Club in NYC and private collections throughout the United States and abroad.
