Gouache Painting with Edward Sprafkin

This hands-on workshop will cover color mixing, layering, and blending techniques, along with exercises to jump-start your gouache expertise. Students will have plenty of time to paint and apply these methods to their artwork. The instructor will provide personalized feedback throughout the day. Students will leave with a newfound confidence in using the unique and expressive medium.

Recommended Gouache Paints: (DO NOT use ‘Acrylic Gouache’ for this workshop!)
Gouache sets are a good place to start: The ShinHan Gouache Set of 12 is a professional paint at a wallet-friendly price available on Amazon. Winsor & Newton Designer Gouache primary set of 6, or Utrecht Gouache at DickBlick.com is also a great professional paint option that I use almost exclusively. Never waste your time and money on “student-grade” paint! Student-grade paint will guarantee a miserable painting experience. Ask for assistance at the art store if you don’t know the difference.
Colors: You can purchase individual tube colors instead, or in combination with a gouache set. A suggested standard palette of colors is listed below.

Fluid 100 Cold Press Watercolor Block 300 lb. sizes 5×7 up to 9×12.
Brushes: I like Princeton and Robert Simmons brushes but any brand synthetic brush will work.
Princeton Velvet Touch Short Handle Wash 1”, ¾”, ½”
Princeton Long Round Size #10
Simply Simmons #0 Liner.
Pencils: HB pencil.
Water Mister: Fine Mist Spray Bottle, or similar.
Brush washer: Any oversized empty yogurt/cottage cheese container.
