Delving Deep into Collage Workshop

Participants will create an expressive collage working with various papers and images they have collected, or we provide. There is a balance between planning and intuition that occurs when making a collage. Participants will select images and cut or tear them to form a pleasing composition. Generally, once the collage is complete, a new story, often an unexpected story emerges. The process is both planned and intuitive. Essentially, images are cut, torn, pasted, or even sewn onto paper onto a cardboard or a mat board backing. They can be embellished with paints, pastel, markers or other materials. Collage is always fun and always yields unexpected results. This is sure to be a fun day.

In person classes will begin with a stress buster activity, followed by a clay project before we embark on the Collage project.

Materials:
● Cardboard or mat board
● Pictures from newspaper, magazine, photographs, cards, etc
● Scissors
● Drawing paper and sharpie pens
● Glue or tape
● Optional materials – Markers, water bucket, apron, rags or paper towels, needle and thread, colored pencil, water colors, brushes

Alcohol Ink Painting
Alcohol inks are brightly colored dye-based paints that are most often used in creating free flowing compositions. They can be used alone or in mixed media projects. They can be purely abstract or expressionistic, or can be controlled for a more realistic effect. Best results occur when worked on a non-porous surface such as glass, yupo paper, ceramic, metal, etc.

In this class participants will explore the properties of alcohol ink on various surfaces including Yupo paper and ceramic tiles. We will create paintings on both surfaces, decorate the ceramic objects created in previous classes, and Holiday Ornaments.

Materials:

  • Isopropyl alcohol 91%
  • Spray bottle for alcohol
  • small jar for alcohol
  • Alcohol inks – at least 3 colors
  • Paper towels
  • Paintbrush
  • Cotton balls
  • q-tips
  • sharpie pens
  • drawing paper
  • yupo paper
