Noon to 4 pm

Abstract designs are not simply laying down areas of color, shapes, and lines.
In this workshop we will review and use the standard elements of art to create an abstract composition. We will talk about the importance of achieving the mood or emotion you wish to convey and the importance of incorporating your own intuition.
We may create practice compositions using color chips and thumbnail drawings as part of an art practice and we will discuss other methods for working out harmonious compositions.
We will create a painting during which Jim will provide real-time coaching.
Supplies: Sketch pad, drawing pencils, kneaded eraser, glue stick, scissors.
Your choice of medium (acrylic, gouache, pastels) and appropriate brushes and tools for that medium. Also 10×10” or “10×16” substrates (canvas, canvas boards, multi-media paper, pastel paper).
Bio: At Missouri’s Columbia College, Jim earned his BA with an emphasis in Art History. Jim made his living in the commercial art and advertising world in graphic point of presence and large format screen printing. After three decades away from fine art he has come full circle returning to his passion for representing the visual world through original pastel paintings. He can also provide you with a fine and thorough analysis of the how, what, and why the masters did things they way they did in their works as well as describing the application of those principles in his own as well as others works.
