This workshop will cover techniques and concepts to generate expressive, atmospheric charcoal portraits, balancing bold mark making with careful observation. Topics discussed will include values, edges, handling of materials, and basic facial proportions.
Materials List:
● Sketchbook or pad, minimum size of 11×14 inches. I recommend bringing something with a smooth or medium-grain surface, such as Stonehenge Legion White Paper or Strathmore 400 Series Drawing Paper.
● General’s 6B compressed charcoal sticks
● Soft or medium thin vine charcoal, at least 3 sticks
● Large kneaded eraser
● Clickable eraser (e.g. Factis BM-2)
● At least one large stump
● Large drawing board
● 2 large clips and tape, to secure your drawing to your board
● Sandpaper, medium grit
● Optional: a chamois or spare cotton rag, for blending and softening
Students may substitute other drawing materials if they wish and if they have some experience with them, but the instructor will be using the specific items listed above.
